Pro-tips for Cleaning and Maintaining Lab Diamond Jewellery

So, both you, and your baubles can shine on

Me-time. That often elusive, very necessary slice of time that we all crave after hectic days, weeks and if you’re particularly unlucky, months. Whether it’s sitting down for an hour-long foot massage or tub bath, enjoying a 3-hour long coffee and reading session, or working out for 30 minutes daily, we all shine a little brighter after taking care of ourselves. While ‘taking care of yourself’ looks different for everyone, we all need it. So does your lab diamond jewellery.

Now, while Everbrite Jewellery does most of the work for you — by creating (customisable) stunning pieces that embody affordable luxury, here’s what you can do to keep it looking as sparkly as the day you bought it.

A little care will go a long way in ensuring your lab diamond jewellery thrives — whether it’s the classic tennis bracelet you wear daily, like it’s second skin, or the scene-stealing earrings that come out only on special occasions.

Everyday essentials: keeping your lab diamond jewellery shiny on a daily basis

If you’ve read all you need to know about lab grown diamonds, you’re aware they have the same chemical composition as mined diamonds — so you care for them and clean them the same way.

While lab diamond jewellery, a more sustainable and affordable alternative is durable, and scratch-resistant, it is as susceptible to wear and tear. Dirt, oil, hand cream you love slathering on, your favourite perfume — they won’t hurt your jewels but can dim their shine. Here’s how to keep them sparkly

Store safe:

  1. If you feel your best in a soft pair of pajamas for bedtime, apply the same principle to your jewels. Wrap them in a soft muslin cloth, or a cotton bag and slip them in a pretty little jewellery box. Portable jewellery boxes are perfect to keep them safe (and clean) when you’re travelling.
  2. In India, keeping your lab diamond jewellery away from dust, dirt and extreme temperature is next to impossible while wearing it, but airtight drawers/cabinets are ideal to keep out the grime when storing.
  3. If you enjoy collecting fine jewels as much as metal baubles, ensure you store them separately. You wouldn’t want the pieces to scratch one another.

Take some space:

Sure, you wear your lab diamond jewellery every day and everywhere — that’s what affordable luxury is about. Being resilient, luxe and versatile enough to complement everything you wear. But wear and tear is natural since it’ll inevitably come into contact with other surfaces. Even our own body oils coupled with creams add a film on diamonds, making them less sparkly.

Like any good relationship, even jewels need space from you.

Avoid wearing when you’re:

  • Swimming (chlorine!) and working out as sweat and dirt will taint them
  • Gardening — do you really want mud in them?
  • Doing heavy lifting (weights or shifting things around the house)
  • Doing anything that could pull and tug at the prongs or put too much pressure on the pieces (that includes sleeping)
  • Deep cleaning (washing dishes, clothes, etc.)

DIY cleaning 101:

Like all other diamond jewellery, Everbrite Jewellery’s lab diamond jewellery is surprisingly low maintenance — give it care, and you can clean it at home too.

I

  • Fill a bowl with warm water. Keep a second bowl handy
  • Add a little mild dish soap to the water. Let the jewellery soak in it for a few minutes
  • Lay the jewellery on a clean, lint-free cloth/towel
  • Dip into the second bowl, which should be filled with fresh, clean water
  • Rinse and pat dry, preferably with a lint-free cloth/towel. Be mindful of using paper-based products as they may leave scratches on the metal

II

III

  • You can use a combination of white vinegar and baking soda to clean your lab diamond jewellery. Mix two tablespoons of baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar, let the baking soda dissolve, and soak your jewellery
  • Rinse the piece with cold water and let it air dry, or use lint-free cloth/towel to pat dry
  • White vinegar can’t be used on gemstones or pearls as they react to the chemicals in it, so if your lab diamonds are set with these, avoid

Don’t use bleach, chlorine, or ammonia to clean your lab diamond jewellery as any household cleaners that are composed of these chemicals could dim its shine and that of the solid gold/precious metal setting. Toothpaste is best avoided too.

PSA: Don’t clean over an open drain unless you want to be knee deep in trash while looking for your jewels.

How often you DIY clean, depends on how often you wear the jewels. A classic, fuss-free engagement ring like Everbrite Jewellery’s Oval Allure Engagement Ring worn every day will benefit from cleaning once a month.

A statement piece like the Oval Diamond Necklace on the other hand that’s worn once in a few months, can be cleaned after two or three (or more) outings.

Expert intervention: what your jeweller can do to keep your pieces shining longer

Sometimes, it’s best to go professional. While foot massages from your spouse are great, once in a while your tense shoulders and knotted back need the chiropractor’s intervention. Brands like Everbrite Jewellery are those experts when it comes to professional maintenance for your lab diamond jewellery. If you come to us for regular maintenance checks, we can polish and re-plate your pieces, tighten up the prongs and use machines like steam or ultrasonic cleaners to re-shine your diamonds.

The benefits of caring for your lab grown jewellery means it will look as fresh, and shiny as it did the day you bought it.
